About Us
John Travaglini and Tony Weir are the two owners of Prospect Wines. Between them they
have almost 50 years experience in the retail and wholesale liquor trade. They formed
their partnership 15 years ago with the opening of a liquor store in Lygon Court
Carlton. Soon after came shop number two at Glenferrie Rd Hawthorn.
In these two liquor stores they started selling a small range of house wines, which at the time was unusual in Melbourne. Once their customers tried their house wines and mentioned them to their friends, word started to spread about how good they were. The range kept on expanding, and soon they were being approached by wineries to help move their excess stocks of wines. It became apparent that there wasn't enough room in the existing liquor stores to carry the full range of house wines as well as the full range of spirits, beers and normal wines you expect in a premium liquor store. So they opened "Prospect Wines" in Brand Smart Shopping Centre, Nunawading, Victoria at the end of 2001. Prospect Wines is a new concept in buying wine. Prospect Wines brings the wineries to the suburbs. At Prospect Wines we only sell our own label wines. Reds, whites, sparklings and fortifieds from different wineries and different regions and states in Australia. Every day a selection of wines from the 90+ wines in the range are opened for tasting. Customers are encouraged to sample wines before they buy. The consumer gets fantastic wine at great savings. The customer response has been great! But what was even more amazing was the response from the wine trade. Winemakers from around Australia have heard of our new shop and are asking us to help them out. Some wineries have tanks full of wine waiting to be sold prior to bottling. Others have a cellar full of bottled wine which needs to be moved. And the bargains are just fantastic. Mind you, for every wine which are accepted, there are probably about 8 which are rejected because of basic wine making faults, and several more that are just too expensive. If a wine doesn't reach quality and value criteria it will not be stocked. Prospect Wines' reputation is on the line with every bottle sold, which is why there is a 100% guarantee on all wines.
More shops were opened under franchise, and our range of wines are now available in many locations around metropolitan Melbourne, regional Victoria, and recently in Hobart! As well as selling wine under the Prospect Wines label, a lot of sales are organized with businesses or individuals who require a private label. A private label can incorporate a company logo or a photo or any message required and is great for weddings, birthdays or business promotion. Prospect Wines are the largest supplier of wine to fundraisers. We ship wine all over Australia to schools, kindergartens, social groups, sporting clubs, etc. We do most of the work and the groups make heaps of easy profit. Service clubs, professional bodies or large sporting clubs with members around Australia can now be serviced via our special on-line fundraising service. The recent introduction of the Prospect Gold Card means that regular customers can earn points each time they buy wine, and reward themselves with offers of free wine or household items.
