C.U.C.I.N.A - Tamara, Malaysia On our recent trip to Langkawi (Malaysia), Nic and I took the opportunity to do a hands-on cooking course- a truly unique and highly recommended cultural experience if ever in Langkawi.
“Cook with Shuk” is hosted on-demand in Shukri’s home- a traditional Malay house assembled without nails and set on wooden beams. There was only one other couple cooking so it really did feel like we were invited over for a dinner party.
The afternoon began with a chat, drink and tour of the property. Shuk pointed out medicinal and herbal plants grown, and we collected fresh herbs and spices used to prepare our meal. With many laughs, lots of explanations and tips, and a couple of drinks, we managed to put together 4 dishes.
Whilst I had the privilage of pounding the fresh chillies to prepare the sambal belacan (shrimp paste), Shukri informed us that if young Malay Iadies are unable to do it correctly, it means they are a bad cook and would not be granted a passport to marriage. Basically, the potential groom can re-think the marriage proposal. Although not Malay, I passed with Distinction!
Dinner was enjoyed in the lower open dining area of the house- a magnificent feast. We then retreated to The Lighthouse Restaurant, Shukri’s beachfront restaurant for dessert. A wonderful finale!!

our Blackburn shopOur Blackburn store is located at the front of our main warehouse. Previously we had a store at the Brandsmart Shopping Centre only about 1 km up Whitehorse Rd. We decided it did not make sense having a retail shop so close to our office, so we have now combined the two.
The main advantage for our customers is ease of getting stock to your car. At Blackburn you can park right at the front door, and we can carry stock out for you. No more struggling with trolleys or long distances.
Our Blackburn shop is open only on Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. Evenings only by appointment. |
