2004 Bendigo Shiraz
Our Bendigo Shiraz 2004 has a deep colour with a pleasant nose of sweet fruit, backed up with hints of vanilla and ripe currants on the palate.
It has a good rich finish with medium weight tannins.
With several years age it is ready for drinking now.

Bendigo region
The towns and lands in the Bendigo region share a common historical legacy in their gold mining roots. The gold bearing soils of the area have proved to be ideally suited to viticulture. The grapes of the Bendigo area have from the earliest days been wine, not table grapes, and to this day they are only minimally irrigated and ultimately handcrafted into premium wines. While drought conditions have affected grape growers around all of Australia, by not relying so heavily on irrigation has been a bonus. In 1876 a Dr. Bleasdale is quoted as saying what we now know as true:
“Its vineyard capabilities give promise of enduring wealth when the last grain of gold shall have been extracted, and the miners and their fortunes become dry matter of history.”
In the vineyards in this region, plantings of red grape varieties predominate over white, with the dominant red variety being Shiraz. Today there are about 40 wineries in the Bendigo region, plus many other grape growers. Some of those wineries are well know names such as Water Wheel, Passing Clouds & Balgownie. Others are very small owner operated businesses without the huge resources behind them, instead relying on their own skills to craft wine and then be able to market it in competition to the big guys; some fail.

C.U.C.I.N.A - Tamara, Malaysia On our recent trip to Langkawi (Malaysia), Nic and I took the opportunity to do a hands-on cooking course- a truly unique and highly recommended cultural experience if ever in Langkawi.
“Cook with Shuk” is hosted on-demand in Shukri’s home- a traditional Malay house assembled without nails and set on wooden beams. There was only one other couple cooking so it really did feel like we were invited over for a dinner party.
The afternoon began with a chat, drink and tour of the property. Shuk pointed out medicinal and herbal plants grown, and we collected fresh herbs and spices used to prepare our meal. With many laughs, lots of explanations and tips, and a couple of drinks, we managed to put together 4 dishes.
Whilst I had the privilage of pounding the fresh chillies to prepare the sambal belacan (shrimp paste), Shukri informed us that if young Malay Iadies are unable to do it correctly, it means they are a bad cook and would not be granted a passport to marriage. Basically, the potential groom can re-think the marriage proposal. Although not Malay, I passed with Distinction!
Dinner was enjoyed in the lower open dining area of the house- a magnificent feast. We then retreated to The Lighthouse Restaurant, Shukri’s beachfront restaurant for dessert. A wonderful finale!!
