Zinfandel Vs Tempranillo 2006 Magaret River Zinfandel $12.95

Zinfandel, in Europe known as Primitivo, is a red-skinned wine grape. It is known for its intense fruitiness, lush texture, and high alcohol content. Typically, Zinfandel wine tastes spicy and fruity. In California winemakers use Zinfandel grapes to produce a wide range of wine styles including sweet White Zinfandels, light-bodied reds reminiscent of Beaujolais nouveau, full bodied dry reds, sweet late harvest dessert wines, and port-style wine. Most serious wine critics in the 1970s-1980s considered White Zinfandel to be insipid and uninteresting, while many also consider the heavy styles to be too high in alcohol, making wines that are too 'hot' and not food friendly. The U.S. producers of Zinfandel made a shift from the 1990s into the new millennium with the production style for their dry reds. Although high in alcohol, as much as 15 percent or more, the wines have thrown off their hot abrasive flavors and the wines have evolved with gentle tannins, and are stated to be rich and tasty from ripe fruit flavors brought out by newer fermentation techniques. This new style of Zinfandel created age-worthy Zinfandels of remarkable complexity and finesse, although always with great vigor and power. In Australia it is grown in all regions, however it seems to thrive best in the south east corner of Western Australia, and especially in Margaret River. Wineries such as Cape Mentelle developed a cult following for their Zinfandel and helped establish the grape’s popularity.
2005 Margaret River Tempranillo $11.95

Tempranillo is Spain's premier variety. It is the backbone of the country's greatest dry red wines. Its reputation is built primarily upon the elegant, silky wines from Rioja Alta, and the turbo-charged blockbusters from Ribera del Duero. Wines from these regions are noted for their longevity.Tempranillo can also make fresh, fruity, unoaked 'joven' styles. These delightful wines are released young and are often served slightly chilled in summer. They have a crunchy vitality, as refreshing as a strawberry icy-pole.The other country where tempranillo has a distinguished pedigree is Portugal. Known there as tinta roriz, it is a vital component of vintage port. It was for use in fortified wines that Hubert de Castella brought the variety to Australia in the 1800s.Suddenly, however, tempranillo has a new lease of life in Australia as a dry red. One of the reasons for its popularity is its broad flavour spectrum. It can show strawberry/raspberry/blackberry/mulberry characters, as well as tobacco/herb/olive/tar/spice and sometimes an earthy, farmyard character. It can be quite silky, with fine chalky tannins. With so many exciting wines emerging already, the future is bright for tempranillo in Australia, and statistics show the surge in its popularity: in 1999 a mere 29 tonnes were crushed, but by 2003 this had increased to 705 tonnes. Tempranillo loves our climate and will produce high-quality fruit as long as the viticulture is right. |

Sophisticated Wines from Healsville Most tourists to the Yarra Valley think about Yarra Glen and Coldstream for wine and Healsville is where the Sanctuary is. But Healsville also grows some fantastic cool climate grape crops and there are some stunning wines now made by wineries such as Tarrawarra, Giant Steps, Yarra Track and Innocent Bystander.
Healsville Chardonnay 2006
The Chardonnay crop was hand picked from a small Healsville vineyard where yields were ideal, at around two ton to the acre. The excellent growing conditions for the 2006 season for this variety has contributed to desirable sugar and acid levels.
The Yarra Valley Chardonnay style has evolved from monster oaky styles of the past to more fruit driven lightly wooded styles of today. The winemaker’s intention was to hand craft a classic Yarra Valley Chardonnay combining the best of both styles which is drinking well know without the need for any bottle aging. It is pale gold in colour and has a bouquet of buttery characters derived from partial malolactic fermentation, with hints of mango and pear. On the palate grapefruit and honeydew melon are evident together with balanced acid and mid-palate fullness and mild dash of toasty French oak. The individual components in this bottle come together to form a beautifully balanced dry white wine ideally suited to complement most full flavoured foods.

Healsville Cabernet Sauvignon 2006
Shiraz is hard to fully ripen in most regions of the Yarra Valley because it is a late bloomer and quite often does not get enough sunlight. Cabernet Sauvignon on the other hand is ideally suited to the climate and soil of the Yarra Valley. Names such as Mount Mary, Oakridge, St Huberts and Yarra Yering immediately spring to mind.
For this wine the winemaker blended a small proportion of Coldstream fruit with the Healsville fruit to give it better balance. It has resulted in a Cabernet with a deep purple colour and a nose of ripe fruit with hints of mint. The palate is rich and luxurious with very ripe fruit, lashings of cassis, with earthy full bodied characters. It is an excellently made wine and despite the rich flavours, has a delicate smooth finish.
You will need to hunt around in your cupboard to find the old corkscrew for this red. The winemaker appreciates the benefit of stelvin caps, but preferred the simplicity of an old fashioned hand bottling line with a cork seal to properly finish off this hand made ripper.
Our price only $13.95
